About Mabel
Mabel’s Log is the creation of Sofie and Lizzie Ford, two twenty-something Glasgow girls (who just happen to be sister-in-laws). Between them they concocted the character of Mabel, an amalgamation of each of their (better!) traits. They’d like to think there is a little bit of Mabel in everyone.
So who is Mabel I hear you ask?
She tells me that though there is one more candle on the cake every year, she is more or less what she has always been. That she still feels the same, still acts the same, still loves the same – more or less. Knowing her, as I do, I kind of understand what she means. Perhaps the important things always stay the same – more or less. Maybe that’s what makes them important.
Anyone who knows Mabel, even just a little, will know that she is more happy, less sad. More chatty, less quiet. More dress up, less dress down. More industrious, less idle. More home cooking, less carry out. More classic, less trendy. More people, less solitude.
But to those of us who know Mabel more closely than these broad brush strokes, those of us who have cried on her shoulder, who have laughed with her, who have stayed up all night talking to her, who have loved her, and who have called her a friend, will know that Mabel is so much more than these things. They will know that she is more straight-talker, less diplomatic. More mischievous, less malicious. More friends, less acquaintances. More tenacious, less feeble. More supportive, less burdensome. More trusting, less suspicious. More loving, less hating. More forgiving, less vindictive. More generous, less mean. More thoughtful, less inconsiderate. More joy, less tears.
And so what is the sum of all this weighing? Simply put Mabel is a great friend – nothing more, nothing less.
