Mission Beautician: Microdermabrasion (inc. some VERY special offers!!)
In case you hadn’t heard, I’m on an incredibly exciting and highly dangerous mission to find the best beauty treatments and salons across the fair city of Glasgow. It’s a nail biter. If you’ve missed the first couple of installments click HERE (for the scene setting) and HERE (for the report on the pick of the massages).
My next challenge was the most dangerous of all – namely because it involved taking a few minor risks with my face. I mean, I’m definitely no oil painting but still, entrusting a complete stranger with your face for an hour or so does take some courage. I’ll level with you here- I am not someone who goes for a lot of facials or more advanced treatments. Every now and again I have been granted one as a real treat, and have duly absolutely loved it, but it’s fair to say that I don’t have a routine skincare regime that involves a bi-monthly professional treatment. In fact, though I’m shamed to admit it, when my mission unearthed microdermabrasion, I had to google it to find out what on earth it was. I know. I am THAT uncool. Now, however, I’m delighted to share my newfound wisdom with you and give you a few recommended spots around the city that you can find it expertly delivered. You are welcome.
Microdermabrasion is no standard facial treatment; it is a non-surgical method of rejuvenating the skin by exfoliation without using chemicals or laser. It is a new, virtually painless alternative to traditional chemical and laser peels. In most beauty salons or treatment rooms, it would be considered a more advanced procedure so it may not be available as a treatment at your usual salon.
It is performed by using a hand-held device (a bit like a scratchy pen), to pass a controlled flow of fine crystals over the skin (oooooooo crystals). As the crystals pass over the skin they are immediately sucked away with a vacuum, taking the top-most layer of dead skin cells away too. This skin exfoliating process is said to improve the tone and texture of the skin, revealing new skin cells that are soft and smooth. This process is also thought to promote the production of new collagen, which should improve your skin’s resistance to the effects of ageing. Useful.
Microdermabrasion is recommended by salons in the treatment of fine lines and wrinkles, sun damaged skin, acne prone skin, blackheads, whiteheads, superficial age spots and oily, dry or patchy skin. It can be used on all skin types, young and old, male and female and the results are instant and visible from the first treatment though most clinics or salons usually recommend a course of treatments for the maximum benefit. Sounds pretty good, right?
So where in Glasgow can I get my hands on this magical treatment?
Transform is not your average beauty salon, nor is it your go-to for a cheeky facial, it is in fact the UK’s leading cosmetic surgery company. Wowza. Try not to be alarmed – many of the treatments they offer are non-surgical so if the thought of a knife going anywhere near your face gives you the heebie geebies then rest assured. The Glasgow clinic prides itself on it’s friendly and personal service and though the environment may be clinical, they aim to offer a warm approach that can put you at ease.
So how was it?
Transform definitely has the feels more like a clinic than anything else which comes as no surprise considering the range of cosmetic procedures on offer. However, whilst it may not have that, ‘spa day’ feeling, you can feel confident that you are in safe, professional and capable hands. When the lovely Emily went along for her treatment (the first time she had tried microdermabrasion), she was impressed by the professionalism she was met with and their straight-forward approach, describing it as, ‘no frills – it does what it says on the tin’. As microdermabrasion goes, it is also reasonably inexpensive at £55 for a session lasting around 45 minutes.

When Lizzie went along and met Nicole from About Face, she realised that this was a salon that offered both clinical expertise (they offer a large range of advanced cosmetic procedures including electrolysis and IPL hair removal as well as using electrolysis for the removal of skin blemishes such as red veins or skin tags and laser treatment for skin complaints) as well as a friendly, local salon atmosphere. This is a formula that has proved highly successful for them over the 26 years they have been around and they provide a qulaity of care that has made it the ‘g0-to’ for many people in Glasgow looking for this kind of treatment. They also offer the full range of expected beauty treatments from waxing to a french manicure and use amazing French beauty products from Sothys.
So how was it?
Nicole was fantastic – Lizzie felt she learned more about skincare in the first half hour than she had otherwise in life so far. The atmosphere was both smart and clinical at the same time as being warm and welcoming, and she felt in safe hands. Of the microdermabrasion treatment she said, “My skin feels fantastic – Nicole showed me the dead skin that had been removed and I definitely feel that it’s been worthwhile! Everyone was very friendly and this is a place I would definitely come back to if I was considering any advanced cosmetic procedures.”
