Cake and celebrity encounters: A special report from Brit Mums Live 2012

Posted on

I won’t lie, I’m writing this from my bed. I’m wiped. It’s been a VERY busy weekend down in the big smoke (London) at the Brit Mums Live conference. It was great, but definitely exhausting.

Even going with a friend I couldn’t help feeling VERY nervous, like a kid on their first day at school, wondering if anyone would want to sit next to me for lunch. Thankfully there was tea and cake before the first session and this somewhat relaxed me. Oh how I love a bit of blueberry loaf!

From then on things went pretty smoothy, we plonked ourselves down next to two blonde girls in the first session and one of them just happened to me Katy Hill. She’s everything you’d want from a Blue Peter presenter, warm, chatty and GREAT teeth. I don’t know who they’ve got doing that show at the moment, but bring back Katy Hill that’s what I say.

Sadly, when awards time came Mabel’s Log didn’t win. But the very lovely Mammasaurus did and how can I really be disappointed losing out to such a wonderful blog? If you haven’t already (and surely you have) be sure to check it out by clicking HERE. I also want to give a BIG shout out to all the other nominees in the Fresh Voice category – in my opinion your voices are all incredibly fresh and it was a real honour to be nominated with you all!

Day one was rounded off with plenty of vino and then some lovely italian food with my family. I can think of worse ways to spend a Saturday, though I instantly regretted staying up late chatting when the alarm woke me up bright and early on Sunday morning. I think I was pretty zombie like throughout the entire first session, but thankfully some more tea and cake was served up and that kicked me right in to gear.

Day 2 was even more jam packed, filled with session after session of vital information. I also bumped into a fellow Scot, Ali from Mindful Mum. It’s always nice to see a few Scottish folk representing south of the border.

However, the real highlight of day 2 came right at the end with the WONDERFUL Cherry Healey. I won’t lie I LOVE Cherry. Everything from her name to her signature  plait hairstyle. I saw her on day one wearing the most statement of statement leggings (who would guess she was a mother?) and I can tell you there was nothing ludicrous about them! When she spoke near the end of the conference she was funny, informative, encouraging and a great dancer (who knew?). It has only confirmed my suspicious that I feel sure Cherry and I would be the best of friends. Crazy fan? Not. At. All.

All the speakers were pretty marvellous and had so much wisdom to share, really reminded me that I’ve only been doing this for six months – they are all such pros. I feel like I have to give a special mention to Janis Curry who spoke about Facebook pages, though it wasn’t really so much what she said as it was about how she said. Just really inspiring and motivating. I especially liked the bit about writing for your mother – I thought I was the only one who did this! Check out Janis’ website by clicking HERE.

Needless to say after all that I slept like a baby last night and now that I’m up I’m feeling refreshed and ready to go. A big thanks to Brit Mum for having me and nominating me, it really was an honour. Until next year…

COMING UP THIS WEEK: It’s that time of year once more, where we’ll all be packing up our tents and heading off to a festival. I’ll be covering everything you need to know to get there and back in one piece, while having a ball in between.

MISS IT, MISS OUT: Don’t forget to enter the BIG nursery give away to win yourself some serious baby swag. Find out more about what’s up for grabs by clicking HERE.

Have a great week.

Love,

Mabel
