Growing up, my mother had flowers in every room of the house. Whether they were picked up at the shops or a handful from her well tended and much admired garden, she’s always said that a well flowered home is enough to ease any bad mood. Though I’m not sure even a thousand roses could have improved my mood as a teenager, a pretty bunch certainly brightens my day now! So in an effort to brighten yours I have trolled the streets of Glasgow to find you the best florists for every occasion:
Lavender Blue – Allie, the wonderful girl who owns this shop on Hyndland Street, is my new best friend. I dropped in there by chance a few weeks ago and left wondering why anyone in the area would ever buy their flowers anywhere else. A total chatterbox, Allie delivered gems such as, ‘when I’m arranging flowers I just ask the simple question – would I give this to my mother?’ With care and attention like that I would definitely give them to mine! Allie’s flowers are are also completely affordable making them a great independent alternative to buying your bunch from a supermarket. But just incase convenience trumps local goodness, for a small fee Allie runs classes where you can bring along your own flowers (even if you did get them at the supermarket) and teaches you how to arrange them. PERFECT. To find out more about Lavender Blue, Allie and her classes visit www.lavenderblueglasgow.com or phone 0141 339 5747
Mabel’s pick for…Everyday flowers for my house.
Enid Reid Flowers – Run by the lady herself, Enid’s flowers have long been a favourite of my dear mum. Always unusual (Enid hand-picks her flowers from the Glasgow market) and artistically arranged, telling of her interior design background, Enid’s flowers are enough to make anybody’s day. The go-to florist for anyone who lives on the south side of the city (though some have been known to send them all the way to London), Enid is always full of great chat. She’s also highly entertaining at any of her themed flower arranging classes which include a cheeky glass of bubbly – the perfect night out with the girls? ABSOLUTELY! Mabel’s pick for…Something special for my mum (I can pay Enid no finer compliment).
Mood Flowers – Nick who took the helm of Mood Flowers from his wife a few years ago is an absolutely charming fellow. Resident flower expert on STV’s The Hour, I tried to keep the embarrassing questions to a minimum (does Michelle McManus ever belt out ‘All This Time’ in between filming?) when I met him at his design studio a few weeks ago. Though Nick says himself he wasn’t a ten year old out picking daisies, since leaving his job as an accountant (good decision) he has become obsessed with flowers. And it shows in the results – with their beautiful hand-tied arrangements and centre pieces Nick and his team of five others arrange the flowers for around two hundred weddings a year. WOW! Though we’re not quite sure how where he finds the time, Nick also runs an AMAZING flower school. The classes ranging from two and a half hours to a one week career course are always running but fill up fast so get in touch quickly to bag a spot. Mabel’s Pick for…any and every special occasion!
If you want to cheer up your home as the dark nights close in, you don’t have to break the bank – all of the above shops also sell flowers by the stem so you can pick a few you fancy in lovely autumnal oranges and reds, like I did, and pop them in glass bottles, tea-cups, or maybe even a teapot if you’re feeling adventurous!
